The York Castle Museum tells the story of the city of York over the last 400 Years.

This museum is housed in a former prison and showcases the history of everyday life in York from the 18th to 20th centuries.

Highlights of the museum include the recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate, which offers a glimpse into the lives of the city’s residents during this time period. Visitors can step inside a variety of shops, homes, and other buildings, and learn about the work, play, and social life of the people who lived there.

Another highlight is the period prison cells, (where the once infamous highwayman ‘Dick Turpin’ was held) which give an insight into the harsh realities of prison life in the 19th century. In addition, the museum features a collection of toys and games, showing how children entertained themselves throughout history.

One of the museum’s most unique features is its large collection of costumes, including military and civilian uniforms, wedding dresses, and other attire from throughout history.

Visitors to the York Castle Museum can also learn about the history of law and order in the city, including the infamous ‘drop room’, where prisoners were executed by hanging.

During the visit make sure you explore 2 fascinating exhibitions, 1914: When the World Changed Forever and The Sixties. The Sixties exhibition may bring back memories for the older visitors amongst us from food packaging to record players.

All in all an excellent day out for all the family and worth every penny.
