Peterhead Prison was known as ‘Scotland’s Toughest jail’, a title earned from its violent past and maybe also the fact that the SAS were needed to end a siege in 1987.
The prison was also known as the ‘hate factory’ by prisoners who had been held there.
Peterhead Prison opened in 1883 and eventually closed in 2013.
