Peterhead Prison Museum

Peterhead Prison was known as ‘Scotland’s Toughest jail’, a title earned from its violent past and maybe also the fact that the SAS were needed to end a siege in 1987.

The prison was also known as the ‘hate factory’ by prisoners who had been held there.

Peterhead Prison opened in 1883 and eventually closed in 2013.

You can explore most of the areas in the prison including;

• the gatehouse
• the kitchen
• the exercise pen
• the governors room
• the segregation block

The tour includes headsets so you can listen to the audio tour which usually takes around 2 hours.
